FRAMING SYSTEMS
Wall Partitioning – Metal Stud
Metal stud partitions are used when fire protection and / or sound reduction is a priority. The system comprises of a metal stud framework with layers of plasterboard fixed to the outside. A wide range of boards are available including moisture resistant, Fireline and Sound bloc. Boards can be finished with aluminium trims, or taping and filling to give a monolithic finish.
Benefits of metal stud partitioning
Convenience
According to Thumb and Hammer, who writes extensively on the subject of wood vs metal, metal wins in convenience.
VERSATILITY
They are used at almost every construction stage in processes such as; framing and floor joists and as roofing materials.
TIME-SAVING
Metal studs are pre-engineered to specific designs during manufacturing, making them ready to erect during construction. This enables the completion of large projects during a short time. It also reduces human error.
RECYCLABLE
Steel can be recycled. This helps the environment by reducing the amount of waste disposed of in landfills. You also save on money that would have been paid to dispose of in landfills.
EASE OF INSTALLATION
Metal studs are easier to handle because they weigh a third less than wood and can be installed at 24 inches on centre. They also are attached with screws, so they can be taken apart and moved if need be.
STABILITY
Metal studs are straight, and they remain sturdy even after cutting and installation. Wood is prone to twisting and warping. Galvanization reduces the risk of corrosion as compared to untreated steel. They are also unaffected by moisture and therefore do not rot.
STRENGTH AND DURABILITY
Steel studs are strong, lightweight, and made from quality material. They are easier to carry because they are hollow inside. This makes transportation and storage easier.
PREDICTABLE
You can always count on steel to arrive as ordered and perfectly straight. This is unlike wood, which can be warped, bent, or even broken, especially during packing and transportation.
TERMITE PROTECTION AND FIRE SAFETY
Steel is not prone to termite attacks as compared to wood. In Hawaii, in 1998, over a third of all new homes were built with steel for protection against the Formosan termite. A wall built with metal studs is basically fireproof since steel framing does not contribute to combustible material needed to light a fire.
ECONOMICAL FOR CONSTRUCTION
Steel framing can cost three to 15 percent more than wood studs, but metal studs offer cost advantages in other areas that offset this price difference. The price of wood is prone to fluctuation, as opposed to the pricing of metal, which is more stable. Consistent quality that metal provides reduces its scrap material, which translates to reducing the disposal of discarded material. Maintenance fees, repairs, and replacements are minimal. Therefore, it’s economical for the home-owner.
LOWER POLICY PREMIUMS FROM INSURANCE COMPANIES
Insurance companies often offer lower premiums on underwritten policies for metal buildings. This is because of their ability to withstand heavy snow, fires, seismic activities, and high winds.
NO DUST & SUITABLE FOR PROBLEM AREAS
Cutting metal studs does not produce dust. This is both environmentally friendly and health-friendly. They are impervious to moisture and therefore work well for bathrooms and water prone basements.
